Help us tell ACOG it’s time to fix the stillbirth epidemic.
The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) is the professional association of physicians that sets the standard of prenatal care in the United States. Help us let them know that 23,000 babies stillborn in the U.S. every year, many of which are preventable, is completely unacceptable.
Here are 2 easy ways you can help us reach ACOG:
Guidelines Literature Review
Two Yale Masters of Public Health students helped Measure the Placenta investigate guidelines for stillbirth prevention in 2023. They concluded: "The standards of care that are used and accepted in the field set forth by ACOG come with very little evidence to support them, yet ACOG claims they rely on clinical studies to make evidence-based decisions." Thousands of lives could be saved
Based on stillbirth rates in the United States, we conservatively estimate that 40,000 stillbirths might have been prevented in the last decade if Estimated Placental Volume measurements had been a standard of prenatal care. However the vast majority of patients today do not receive placenta volume measurements for their baby during pregnancy.
We assess this failure in preventive care as follows:
Lack of Awareness of the risks presented by a very small or large placenta,
Lack of Directive from key medical associations, and
Lack of Training among practitioners.
