Raising the Bar - Placental Pathology Reports: the Key to Improving Maternal and Fetal Outcomes - by Heather Florescue, MD, FACOG

Help us make better placental pathology reports a reality.

No other pathology report in medicine is ignored and not understood by the ordering doctor more than a placenta report. Measure the Placenta and Dr. Heather Florescue of Rochester, NY, are leading the charge to improve reports and make them easier for providers and patients to understand. Help us recommend new standards for placental pathology reporting. We would love to see pathologists explain the scientific jargon of a pathology report by giving a description of what terms mean, rather than merely stating findings. Our goal is to give pathologists the tools to help providers make interpretations to improve care. This information empowers providers to be able to answer patient questions. We are also hopeful that new information included in reports, such as listing the fetal weight to placental weight ratio, will highlight the importance of placental size.

How can you help? The first phase of our project is to collect patient stories. Did your provider go over your baby’s placental pathology findings? Were you, as the patient, able to make sense of the findings? Please share your experience by filling out our Google Form.
